Nonprofit formation and tax status are different

Keep the state registration conversation separate from the federal tax-status conversation.

01

Understand the distinction

Nonprofit incorporation under state law does not automatically establish federal tax exemption. Ask what each step involves before describing the organization as tax exempt.

02

Match the work to the goal

Explain the organization’s purpose and ask which administrative tasks are included. Federal applications, governance advice, charitable solicitation matters, and ongoing compliance may be separate.

03

Keep approval claims factual

Do not assume a filing, determination, or deduction is approved until the responsible authority has confirmed it. Keep copies of formal decisions and clarify continuing responsibilities.
